چکیده

Myoelectric prostheses approximate the motion and flexibility of biological limbs, especially when compared to their mechanical counter-parts. Machine learning enhances the functionality of these devices; however, in an everchanging environment, the effectiveness of conventional approaches is impeded. We introduce Partition Tree Learning—a method for learning predictions in an ongoing fashion whilst being able to identify and adapt to new contexts automatically. We compare the performance of PTL to that of a stochastic gradient descent learner on a stream of data from a participant actuating a myoelectrically controlled robot arm. In a consistent context both learners’ predictions are comparable. After a context switch, PTL is able to adapt to the change and outperform the gradient descent learner. These preliminary results indicate that PTL may effectively deal with change in real-world prosthetic use, lending its ability to learn over varying situations to the constantly changing environment of powered prosthetics.

Adaptation to random and systematic errors: Comparison of amputee and non-amputee control interfaces with varying levels of process noise

The objective of this study was to understand how people adapt to errors when using a myoelectric control interface. We compared adaptation across 1) non-amputee subjects using joint angle, joint torque, and myoelectric control interfaces, and 2) amputee subjects using myoelectric control interfaces with residual and intact limbs (five total control interface conditions). We measured trial-by-t...

A context-sensitive dynamic role-based access control model for pervasive computing environments

Resources and services are accessible in pervasive computing environments from anywhere and at any time. Also, due to ever-changing nature of such environments, the identity of users is unknown. However, users must be able to access the required resources based on their contexts. These and other similar complexities necessitate dynamic and context-aware access control models for such environmen...

Myoelectric control of prosthetic hands: state-of-the-art review

Myoelectric signals (MES) have been used in various applications, in particular, for identification of user intention to potentially control assistive devices for amputees, orthotic devices, and exoskeleton in order to augment capability of the user. MES are also used to estimate force and, hence, torque to actuate the assistive device. The application of MES is not limited to assistive devices...

The role of muscle synergies in myoelectric control: trends and challenges for simultaneous multifunction control.

Myoelectric control is filled with potential to significantly change human-robot interaction due to the ability to non-invasively measure human motion intent. However, current control schemes have struggled to achieve the robust performance that is necessary for use in commercial applications. As demands in myoelectric control trend toward simultaneous multifunctional control, multi-muscle coor...
